African national flags tell stories of independence, liberation movements, older kingdoms, regional identity and modern statehood. Many use bold combinations of red, green, yellow, black, blue and white.

Pan-African colors and local traditions
Red, yellow and green appear on many African flags and are often associated with Pan-African identity, partly through the influence of Ethiopia’s historic colors. Red, black and green also have an important Pan-African tradition. Yet African flags are highly varied: national emblems, stars, crescents, shields, birds and geometric divisions reflect each country’s own history.
Building the collection
This section is being developed into a broader reference collection. As new guides are added, the focus is on clear flag descriptions, documented adoption history and careful treatment of symbolic meanings.
