The Republic of the Congo’s flag is divided diagonally into green, yellow and red. It is one of the few national flags using a diagonal Pan-African tricolour.

Meaning

The colors belong to the Pan-African tradition. Green is commonly linked with the country’s forests and agriculture, yellow with friendship and natural resources, and red with the struggle for independence.

History

The flag was adopted in 1959 before independence. It was replaced by a red socialist flag during the People’s Republic of the Congo but restored in 1991 during the return to multiparty politics.
