Eritrea’s national flag has a large red triangle extending from the hoist to the fly, with green above and blue below. A golden olive wreath appears within the red field near the hoist.

Meaning

Green represents agriculture and fertility, blue the Red Sea, and red the sacrifices of the independence struggle. The golden olive wreath is based on an earlier Eritrean emblem and symbolises peace and national achievement.

History

The design is based on the flag of the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front. A national version was adopted at independence in 1993 and its proportions were standardised in 1995.
