Algeria’s national flag is divided vertically into green and white halves with a red crescent and five-pointed star at the centre.

Design and meaning

Green is widely associated with Islam and the country’s historic national movement, while white is associated with peace and purity. The red crescent and star are traditional Islamic symbols and also recall sacrifice during the struggle for independence.

History

The design was used by the Algerian nationalist movement before independence and became the national flag when Algeria gained independence from France in 1962.
