History of the Belize Flag: 1950 Movement to 1981 Independence
Trace the Belize flag from the blue-and-white pre-independence design through the bipartisan national-symbol process, the 1981 independence flag and the 2025 standardization.

Why is 1950 important in Belize flag history?
The wreath around the coat of arms contains fifty leaves to symbolize 1950, identified by Belizean official sources as the beginning of the modern independence movement.
The year is therefore embedded directly into the flag’s design, making the wreath a historical marker as well as a decorative frame.
What flag was used before independence?
Before independence, a blue-and-white flag associated with the People’s United Party used the coat of arms in a white circle. Belize’s National Library explains that the strong party association created concern that the design might not function as a unifying national symbol for all Belizeans.
How was the national flag chosen?
A bipartisan National Symbols Committee invited public submissions for a national flag. The selected independence design retained the blue field and central coat of arms but added red horizontal stripes at the top and bottom.
This made the national flag visually distinct from the earlier blue-and-white party-associated flag.
September 21, 1981: the independence flag
The new flag was officially adopted on September 21, 1981, the date Belize became independent. In a flag-raising address on the eve of independence, Premier George Price described the new blue-white-red flag as an evolution from the earlier blue-and-white flag and as a symbol of national unity.
Why was the flag standardized again in 2025?
Over time, reproductions of Belize’s flag varied in details of the coat of arms, hoist treatment and colors. The 2025 National Symbols Act and accompanying guidelines established a clearer legal and visual standard, including exact Pantone colors, the 3:5 proportion and standardized artwork.
