Before 1973: why did The Bahamas use a British Blue Ensign?
During the colonial period, The Bahamas was part of the British Empire. Like many British colonies, it used a Blue Ensign carrying a local badge. The Union Jack occupied the canton, while the Bahamian badge appeared in the fly.
The colonial badge introduced in 1869 showed a British ship pursuing pirate vessels and carried a motto associated with restored commerce. The badge survived in revised form for more than a century, although the crown, badge shape and method of displaying it changed several times.

What was on the old Bahamas colonial badge?
The badge used on the colonial ensigns was based on a maritime scene. It depicted a British vessel pursuing pirate ships, a reference to the islands’ history and the suppression of piracy. The badge was surrounded by wording associated with the return of lawful commerce.
That imagery was different from the coat of arms used by the independent Bahamas. The modern coat of arms instead centers on the Santa María, a rising sun, conch shell, palm fronds, marlin and flamingo.
Why did the colonial flag change several times?
Most of the changes did not represent a new Bahamian political identity. They reflected wider British heraldic conventions: different crown styles under different monarchs, changes in how colonial badges were displayed, and revisions to the badge itself.

The 1973 independence flag
As The Bahamas prepared for independence, the country needed a national flag that was not based on a British ensign. The new design used three equal horizontal bands of aquamarine, gold and aquamarine with a black equilateral triangle at the hoist.
The Flags and Coat of Arms (Regulation) Act 1973 received assent on July 4 and came into force on July 10, 1973. Its schedule legally describes the flag in heraldic language as “Azure a Fess Or issuing from the dexter a Pile Sable.”
The current flag was raised at independence and has remained the national flag since then.
