Antigua and Barbuda’s flag has a red field with an inverted V framing horizontal black, blue and white areas and a rising golden sun. The design was adopted in 1967 when the islands became an associated state with Britain.
What does the flag look like?
The upper centre is black with a rising yellow sun. Beneath it are blue and white horizontal bands. Red fills the two outer triangular sections.

Official symbolism links the rising sun with the dawn of a new era. Red represents energy, black the African ancestry of the people, blue hope and the Caribbean Sea, and white the sand and aspirations for a brighter future.
Who designed the flag?
The flag was designed by Reginald Samuel in a national competition and first used in 1967. It was retained when Antigua and Barbuda became fully independent in 1981.
