South Sudan’s national flag has black, red and green horizontal bands separated by narrow white stripes, with a blue triangle at the hoist containing a gold five-pointed star.

Meaning

Black represents the people of South Sudan, red the blood shed in the liberation struggle, green the land, white peace, and blue the Nile waters. The gold star represents unity and hope for the new state.

History

The design developed from the flag of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement. It became the official flag of the autonomous region after the 2005 peace agreement and the national flag when South Sudan became independent on July 9, 2011.
