Ghana’s national flag has horizontal red, yellow and green bands with a black five-pointed star in the centre. It became one of the most influential flags of African independence.

Who designed the flag?

Theodosia Salome Okoh designed the flag for Ghana’s independence in 1957. Red represents the sacrifices of the independence struggle, yellow the country’s mineral wealth, green its forests and agricultural resources, and the Black Star African freedom and unity.

History

The flag was first raised on March 6, 1957 when Ghana became independent from Britain. It briefly changed during the 1960s but the original red-yellow-green design was restored.
