Andorra’s national flag is a vertical tricolour of blue, yellow and red with the national coat of arms centred on the yellow band. The modern tricolour developed during the nineteenth century.
What does the Andorran flag look like?
The flag has vertical blue, yellow and red bands. The central yellow band bears Andorra’s coat of arms, which combines heraldic elements connected with the country’s two co-princes and historic territories.
History of the tricolour
Andorra’s national archive notes that earlier Andorran banners used yellow and red. The move toward the present tricolour began in 1866 during the period known as the New Reform, when Guillem d’Areny-Plandolit proposed a new Andorran flag during a visit to the court of Napoleon III.
Why blue, yellow and red?
The colors also echo those of Andorra’s two neighbouring states and co-principal traditions, while the coat of arms makes the flag unmistakably Andorran. Modern government identity standards define the official colors and proportions.
