When may the Bahamas flag be flown?

The Flags and Coat of Arms Regulations, 1991 say the National Flag may be flown on public holidays and on other days declared by the responsible minister. The regulations normally limit display to the period between sunrise and sunset.

Night display: when the National Flag is flown at night, the regulations require it to be properly illuminated.
2

How should the flag be treated?

The regulations require the National Flag to be flown with due respect. It should be kept clean and maintained in a reasonable state of repair.

When a flag becomes worn, faded or otherwise unfit for use, the regulations specify that it should be disposed of privately by burning.

3

What happens when it is flown with other flags?

Subject to the detailed regulations, the Bahamian National Flag should occupy the more prominent position when displayed with other flags. That rule reflects the general principle that the national flag receives precedence in ordinary domestic display.

4

Can the public display the Bahamas flag?

The regulations permit broad public display, but that freedom is subject to restrictions governing disrespectful, misleading, improper or specially regulated uses. Public display should therefore follow the same standards of condition, prominence and respect that apply to official use.

What does Bahamian law protect?

The Flags and Coat of Arms (Regulation) Act 1973 regulates the National Flag, Governor-General’s Flag, Prime Minister’s Flag and Coat of Arms. The Act makes certain forms of defacement or insult an offence and provides the legal basis for later regulations controlling use of the national emblems.

Commercial use can also require official permission. The Government’s MyGateway service provides a formal process for permission to use the National Flag and/or Coat of Arms in specified commercial contexts.
