Chad’s national flag is a vertical tricolour of blue, yellow and red. It was adopted as the country moved toward independence from France.

Meaning of the colors

Blue is associated with the sky, water and hope; yellow with the sun and the northern desert; and red with national unity and the sacrifices made for independence.

History

The flag was adopted in 1959, shortly before Chad became fully independent in 1960. Its layout combines the French tricolour format with Pan-African-inspired colors.
