Madagascar’s national flag has a vertical white band at the hoist and a fly divided horizontally into red above green.

Meaning

Red and white have historic associations with the Merina kingdom and Malagasy sovereignty. Green is often linked with agriculture, the countryside and the Hova communities that played a major role in the independence movement.

History

The flag was adopted in 1958 as Madagascar gained internal autonomy and prepared for full independence from France in 1960.
