Libya’s national flag has horizontal red, black and green bands with a white crescent and star centred on the broad black stripe.

History

The design was created for the Kingdom of Libya and adopted at independence in 1951. Muammar Gaddafi’s governments later replaced it with several different flags, including an entirely green flag. The 1951 design returned during the 2011 revolution and became the national flag again.

Meaning

The colors have historical connections with Libya’s regions and Arab-Islamic heritage. The crescent and star are traditional Islamic symbols.
