Angola’s national flag has red and black horizontal bands with a yellow emblem combining part of a cogwheel, a machete and a five-pointed star.

What do the symbols mean?

The cogwheel represents industrial workers and production, while the machete represents agriculture and the armed struggle for independence. The star is associated with international solidarity and progress. Red recalls the liberation struggle and black represents the African continent.

History

The flag was adopted on November 11, 1975 when Angola became independent from Portugal. Its visual language reflects the symbols and colors of the MPLA independence movement.
