History of the Bangladesh Flag: 1971 Liberation Flag to the 1972 National Design

Bangladesh’s modern flag grew directly from the independence movement. The wartime design carried a map of the country inside the red disc; the post-independence version removed that map and standardized the geometry.

1971: the liberation-era flag

An early red-and-green flag was used by the independence movement in 1971. It placed a golden map of Bangladesh inside the red disc.

Why was the map important?

The map made the flag an unmistakable symbol of the emerging Bangladeshi state during the liberation struggle and separated it visually from the Pakistani national flag.

Why was the map removed?

After independence, the design was simplified. Reproducing a detailed map consistently on both sides of a flag was difficult, especially at smaller sizes, and a plain red disc created a cleaner national symbol.

1972: the modern flag

The post-independence design retained the green field and red disc while removing the map. The flag was formally codified through the Bangladesh National Anthem, Flag and Emblem Order and the People’s Republic of Bangladesh Flag Rules.

Why is the red disc offset?

The disc is positioned slightly toward the hoist so that it appears visually centred when the flag is flying.

What survived from the liberation flag?

The central color idea remained unchanged: a red disc on a green field. This preserved the visual link between the liberation struggle and the independent state.
