Afghanistan flag history

History of Afghanistan’s Flags: Tricolours, Republics, Taliban Rule & 2021 Change

Afghanistan has changed national flags unusually often. Its designs have reflected monarchy, republican rule, communist governments, civil war, the Islamic Republic and Taliban rule.

Early modern flags

Afghanistan used several dark or black royal flags in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, often carrying state or royal emblems.

Black, red and green become important

During the twentieth century, black-red-green combinations became closely associated with Afghan national identity. Different governments changed stripe direction, emblems and proportions.

Republic and communist-era changes

Afghanistan’s coups and regime changes in the 1970s and 1980s produced new state flags, including designs strongly influenced by socialist symbolism.

1990s: Islamic governments and Taliban rule

After the communist government fell, Islamic-state flags returned. The Taliban’s first Islamic Emirate eventually used a white flag with the Shahada in black.

2001–2021: black-red-green Islamic Republic flag

After the Taliban government fell in 2001, Afghanistan restored black-red-green national flags. The Islamic Republic’s best-known version used three vertical bands with the national emblem in white at the centre.

August 2021: Taliban return to power

The Taliban retook Kabul in August 2021 and again used the white Shahada flag for the Islamic Emirate. The former republic tricolour continued to be used by opponents, diaspora communities and in some international contexts.

Why Afghanistan’s flag history is complicated

Few countries have linked flag changes so directly to political regime change. A particular Afghan flag can often be dated to a specific government or constitutional era.
