Why Does the U.S. Flag Have 50 Stars and 13 Stripes?

The stars represent the 50 states, while the 13 stripes preserve the memory of the original colonies. Here is how those two rules developed and why the numbers no longer change in the same way.

Quick answer: the United States flag has 50 white stars, one for each state, and 13 alternating red and white stripes for the original thirteen colonies.

Why are there 50 stars on the American flag?

Each star represents one state of the United States. The rule for adding stars is set out in federal law: after a new state is admitted, a new star takes effect on the following July 4. Hawaii became the 50th state in 1959, so the 50-star flag took effect on July 4, 1960.

Why are there 13 stripes?

The 13 stripes represent the thirteen original colonies. The first national flag resolution of June 14, 1777 called for thirteen alternating red and white stripes and thirteen stars on a blue field.

As new states joined, Congress briefly increased both the number of stars and stripes. That system became impractical, so the Flag Act of 1818 restored the number of stripes permanently to thirteen while allowing the star count to increase with new states.

Why are the stars arranged in rows?

Federal specifications define the current 50-star layout as nine staggered horizontal rows: five rows of six stars alternating with four rows of five. The arrangement was standardized after Hawaii entered the Union.

Could the U.S. flag ever have 51 stars?

Yesโ€”if another state were admitted. Under 4 U.S.C. ยง2, an additional star would be added on the next July 4. The thirteen stripes would remain unchanged.
