The flag of the Czech Republic has two horizontal fields, white above red, with a blue triangle extending from the hoist. The design was created for Czechoslovakia in 1920 and was retained by the Czech Republic after the federation dissolved.

What does the Czech flag look like?

The upper half is white and the lower half red. A blue isosceles triangle reaches from the hoist toward the centre of the flag.

Why was the blue triangle added?

The first Czechoslovak flag used only white and red, the historic colors of Bohemia, but it was too similar to Poland’s flag. A blue triangle was added in 1920, giving the new state a more distinctive design and incorporating a third color widely associated with Slavic national symbolism.

What happened after Czechoslovakia split?

When Czechoslovakia peacefully dissolved at the end of 1992, the Czech Republic chose to retain the familiar white-red-blue flag. Slovakia adopted its own white-blue-red tricolour with the national shield.
