Myanmar’s national flag has three equal horizontal bands of yellow, green and red with a large white five-pointed star centred over all three bands. The current flag was adopted in 2010.

Myanmar’s government describes yellow as representing unity, wisdom and happiness; green as fertility, fairness and a peaceful, green country; and red as bravery and decisiveness. The white star represents purity, honesty, compassion and strength.

History of the flag

The design is based on the tricolours used during the independence struggle. It replaced the previous socialist-era flag on October 21, 2010 under the Union Flag Law.
