History of the Myanmar Flag: 1948 Independence, 1974 Socialist Flag & 2010 Tricolour
Myanmar has used three major national flag systems since independence: the 1948 Union flag, the socialist-era 1974 flag and the current yellow-green-red tricolour introduced in 2010.
January 4, 1948: independence
Burma became independent from Britain in 1948 and adopted a red national flag with a blue canton containing one large white star and five smaller stars.
What did the stars represent?
The star arrangement expressed the union of the country and its constituent peoples.
1974: socialist-era redesign
The 1974 Constitution introduced a new red flag with a blue canton containing a cogwheel, rice ears and 14 stars.
Why a cogwheel and rice?
The symbols reflected the socialist state’s emphasis on industrial workers and peasantry.
2008 Constitution
A new yellow-green-red flag with a large white star was specified during the constitutional transition.
October 21, 2010: current flag adopted
The Union Flag Law entered into force on October 21, 2010, replacing the 1974 State Flag Law and establishing the current design.
What did the new flag change?
It abandoned the socialist cogwheel-and-rice emblem and returned to a simpler tricolour with one large white star.
What stayed important?
Union, national unity and the memory of the independence struggle remained central to the new flag’s official symbolism.
