The Marshall Islands flag has a deep-blue field with rising orange and white diagonal bands and a white 24-ray star in the upper hoist area.

What do the symbols mean?

Blue represents the Pacific Ocean. The white and orange bands represent the Ratak, or Sunrise, and Ralik, or Sunset, island chains and also peace and courage. The star’s 24 rays represent municipal districts, while four longer rays highlight major centres including Majuro, Ebeye, Jaluit and Wotje.

History

The flag was designed by Emlain Kabua and adopted in 1979 when the Marshall Islands moved to self-government.
