Senegal’s national flag is a vertical tricolour of green, yellow and red with a green five-pointed star in the centre of the yellow band.
Meaning
The colors belong to the Pan-African tradition. Green has religious and agricultural associations, yellow is linked with wealth and progress, and red with sacrifice and determination. The central star represents unity and hope.
History
The present flag developed from the flag of the short-lived Mali Federation and was adopted when Senegal became fully independent in 1960.
