Gabon’s national flag is a simple horizontal tricolour of green, yellow and blue. It was adopted when the country became independent from France in 1960.

Meaning

Green represents Gabon’s extensive equatorial forests. Yellow represents the Equator and sunlight, while blue represents the Atlantic Ocean and the country’s waterways.

History

An earlier autonomous Gabonese flag included the French tricolour in the canton. That element was removed at independence, leaving the present three-band design.
