Bosnia and Herzegovina flag history

History of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Flag: 1992 Independence to the 1998 Design

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s current flag was created after the war as a common state symbol, replacing the independence-era fleur-de-lis flag.

1992: independence-era flag

When Bosnia and Herzegovina became independent, it used a white flag carrying a blue shield with six golden fleur-de-lis, drawing on medieval Bosnian heraldry.

Why was a new flag needed?

After the 1992–1995 war and the Dayton Peace Agreement, the state required symbols that could function across Bosnia and Herzegovina’s constituent peoples.

1997–1998 flag commission

The Peace Implementation Council asked the High Representative to establish a process for a new flag if domestic political parties could not agree. An independent commission was created in January 1998.

What designs were considered?

The commission proposed neutral blue-and-gold designs without ethnic or nationalist emblems. One proposal used the now-familiar yellow triangle and white stars.

February 1998: current flag selected

After parliament failed to adopt a proposal, High Representative Carlos Westendorp selected the triangle-and-stars design in early February 1998.

International debut

The new flag was raised at the UN in New York on February 6, 1998 and appeared the next day at the Winter Olympics in Nagano.

Why the design matters

The flag was intentionally designed to emphasize common state identity and Europe rather than one ethnic group’s heraldry.
