Ukraine’s national flag consists of two equal horizontal bands, blue above yellow. The Constitution defines the state flag in exactly those terms.
What does the Ukrainian flag look like?
The upper half is blue and the lower half yellow. Unlike many national flags, it contains no coat of arms or additional emblem.
History of blue and yellow
Blue and yellow have deep roots in Ukrainian heraldry and regional identity. They were used prominently during the nineteenth-century national movement and by Ukrainian state formations during the revolutionary period of 1917–1921. Under Soviet rule the independent national flag was suppressed.
Restoration after Soviet rule
The blue-and-yellow flag re-emerged publicly during the independence movement at the end of the Soviet period. After Ukraine declared independence in 1991, parliament formally established the blue-over-yellow banner as the state flag in 1992. Article 20 of the Constitution later confirmed the design.
What do the colors mean?
A widely recognised modern interpretation compares blue with the sky and yellow with fields of grain. That image has become culturally powerful, but the Constitution itself simply defines the two colors and does not assign them an official symbolic meaning.
