Syria Flag Meaning: Green, White, Black & Three Red Stars

Syria’s current national flag has three horizontal bands—green, white and black—with three red stars in the centre. The historic independence flag returned to official state use after the fall of the Assad government in December 2024.

Current design: green on top, white in the middle, black on the bottom, with three red five-pointed stars across the white band.

What do the colors mean?

Syrian official explanations connect green with the Rashidun tradition, white with the Umayyad period centred in Damascus, and black with the Abbasid era and the overcoming of oppression.

What do the three red stars mean?

The three red stars are associated with historic Syrian regions during the French Mandate period, including Damascus, Aleppo and Deir ez-Zor. The design belongs to Syria’s independence-era flag tradition.

Is this really Syria’s current flag?

Yes. The green-white-black flag with three red stars is displayed by Syrian state institutions, official buildings and diplomatic missions in the post-Assad transitional period.

Why did the flag change?

The red-white-black two-star flag was associated with the Baathist state and the Assad era. After the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government in December 2024, the independence flag used by the opposition and earlier Syrian republic returned to official use.

Is the current design completely new?

No. It revives a much older Syrian flag tradition. A closely related green-white-black three-star flag first appeared during the mandate and independence era and later became one of the main symbols of the Syrian opposition after 2011.
