Syria’s current national flag has three equal horizontal bands of green, white and black with three red five-pointed stars across the central white band. The design returned after the fall of the Assad government in December 2024 and was written into Syria’s 2025 Constitutional Declaration.

What does the Syrian flag look like?

Green forms the top stripe, white the middle and black the bottom. Three red stars are arranged horizontally across the white band. Article 6 of the 2025 Constitutional Declaration defines this design.

History of the current flag

The green-white-black flag with three red stars is often called the Syrian independence flag. It was used during the First Syrian Republic beginning in the 1930s and later became a major symbol of the opposition during the uprising that began in 2011. After the Assad government fell in December 2024, the flag became the state flag again.

What do the colors and stars mean?

Current Syrian government cultural guidance links green with hope and historic Islamic heritage, white with peace and the Umayyad period, and black with historical struggle. The three red stars are connected with regions of the early Syrian republic and are also presented as symbols of freedom, dignity and justice.
