United States Flag Colors: Red, White & Blue Meaning
Red, white and blue are instantly associated with the United States, but an important detail is often missed: the Flag Code does not assign official symbolic meanings to the three colors.
What does red mean?
In Thomsonโs explanation of the Great Seal, red signifies hardiness and valor. This is the historical source behind the common statement that red on the U.S. flag represents bravery or courage.
What does white mean?
White signifies purity and innocence in the Great Seal explanation. Modern educational materials often summarize this as purity.
What does blue mean?
Blue signifies vigilance, perseverance and justice. It is also the color of the union, the blue canton containing the stars.
Are these official flag meanings?
Not in the same sense as the statutory meanings assigned to symbols on some national flags. Title 4 of the U.S. Code sets the flagโs stripes, stars and rules of use, but does not state that red, white and blue must symbolize specific virtues. The well-known meanings are historically grounded in the 1782 Great Seal explanation.
What are the official colors?
Federal specifications use standardized color references for government flags. For most educational uses, the key point is that the flag consists of red and white stripes, a blue union and white stars; commercial digital approximations should not be confused with official textile standards.
Why this distinction matters
Many websites present โred = valor, white = purity, blue = justiceโ as if Congress assigned those meanings directly to the flag in 1777. The surviving legal resolution does not say that. Separating the Great Seal explanation from the Flag Code makes the history more accurate.
