Jamaica Flag Etiquette & Protocol: Display, Half-Mast and Handling Rules
A practical guide to official Jamaican flag etiquette, including handling, half-mast procedure, public buildings, schools and private use.

How should the Jamaican flag be treated?
Official guidance describes the flag as a national emblem that should be treated with respect. It should not touch the ground or floor, and writing, pictures or symbols should not be added to it.
When multiple flags are displayed together, the Jamaican flag should not be treated as subordinate by being made smaller than another flag in the same display.
How is the flag flown at half-mast?
When flown at half-mast, the flag should first be raised briefly to the peak and then lowered slowly to the half-mast position. Before it is finally lowered, it should again be raised to the peak.
Public buildings and government property
Jamaica Information Service guidance says the flag should be flown on government and municipal buildings and offices. Government-owned ships, defence craft and lighthouses also fly the flag, while government vehicles and aircraft may carry a representation of it.
Can private buildings fly the Jamaican flag?
Yes. Official guidance allows the flag to be flown on private buildings on national and state occasions and specifically calls for its display during official visits by the Governor-General or Prime Minister.
Flag use in schools
Government-aided schools are expected to fly the flag while school is in session. Special raising and lowering ceremonies are recommended at the beginning and end of terms and on the anniversary of independence.
