Tanzania’s national flag is divided diagonally into green and blue fields by a black band edged in yellow. The design dates from the 1964 union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar.

Green represents the land and agriculture, blue the Indian Ocean and inland waters, black the people of Tanzania, and yellow the country’s mineral wealth.

History

The flag combines elements of the earlier flags of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. It was adopted after the two states united in 1964.
