Red has long been associated with Morocco’s Alaouite dynasty and with royal authority. Green has strong associations with Islam, and the five-pointed star is a long-standing symbol used in Moroccan identity.

History

Moroccan rulers used plain red flags for centuries. The green pentagram was added by royal decree in 1915, creating the design used today.
