Cabo Verde’s national flag has a blue field crossed by narrow white-red-white horizontal stripes, with a circle of ten yellow stars near the hoist.

What do the ten stars mean?

The ten stars represent the ten main islands of the Cabo Verde archipelago. Blue represents the Atlantic Ocean, while white is associated with peace and red with effort and determination.

History

The present flag was adopted in 1992 during the transition to a multiparty political system. It replaced an earlier design closely related to the flag of Guinea-Bissau and the PAIGC independence movement.
