Honduras Flag: Meaning, Five Stars, Colors, History & Facts
Explore Honduras’s blue-white-blue flag, the five stars of Central American unity, the 1866 and 1949 laws, the 1:2 construction and the current turquoise-versus-turquà color debate.

What does the Honduras flag look like?
The national flag has three equal horizontal bands: blue, white and blue. Five blue five-pointed stars sit in the center of the white stripe, with four arranged around a fifth central star.

What do the five stars mean?
The stars represent Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica—the five former Central American federation states. They also preserve the historical aspiration for Central American fraternity and unity.
What do blue and white mean?
Official educational material connects the blue bands with the Honduran sky, surrounding seas and civic values including fraternity and loyalty. White is associated with peace, purity, integrity and faith.
The exact blue shade has been debated for decades. The 1949 reform uses the term azul turquesa; on September 24, 2026, a bill was introduced in Congress proposing to define azul turquà explicitly. Because that measure was introduced as a proposal, it should not yet be treated as an enacted replacement for the existing wording.
History of the Honduras flag
The blue-white-blue structure descends from the nineteenth-century Central American federation. Honduras established the five-star flag by Legislative Decree No. 7 on February 16, 1866. Decree No. 29 in 1949 standardized its proportions, star arrangement and color wording.
