Liechtenstein’s flag has two horizontal bands, blue above red, with a gold princely crown in the upper hoist corner. The crown was added in the twentieth century after an unusual Olympic discovery.
What does the Liechtenstein flag look like?
The flag consists of equal blue and red horizontal bands. A gold crown appears near the hoist in the blue band, representing the principality and its constitutional monarchy.
Why was the crown added?
At the 1936 Summer Olympics, Liechtenstein discovered that its plain blue-over-red flag was effectively identical to Haiti’s civil flag. A gold crown was therefore added in 1937 to create a distinctive national design.
