Iraq flag meaning

Iraq Flag Meaning: Red, White, Black & Allahu Akbar Explained

Iraq’s current national flag has three horizontal bands—red, white and black—with the Arabic phrase Allahu Akbar written in green across the central white stripe.

What does Allahu Akbar mean?

Allahu Akbar means “God is greatest.” The phrase is written in green Arabic script across the white centre band.

Why are there no stars on the current flag?

Iraq’s parliament approved a revised flag in 2008 that removed the three green stars used on earlier versions while retaining the red-white-black tricolour and the Takbir.

Why was the script changed?

Earlier versions used a rendering associated with Saddam Hussein’s handwriting. After 2003 the inscription was changed to a more formal Arabic calligraphic style, and the 2008 design retained the phrase without the three stars.

What do the red, white and black colors represent?

The colors belong to the broader Pan-Arab flag tradition. Modern Iraqi law focuses on the flag as a symbol of the components of the Iraqi people rather than assigning one exclusive legal meaning to each color.

What does the Constitution say?

Article 12 of Iraq’s Constitution states that the flag, anthem and emblem are to be regulated by law in a way that symbolizes the components of the Iraqi people.

How can you identify the current flag?

Look for three equal horizontal bands—red, white and black—with only the green Arabic phrase in the centre. If three green stars are present, the image is showing an older design.
