What do the five stars mean?
The stars represent the five states of the former Federal Republic of Central America: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. They also express the long-standing ideal of renewed Central American unity.
History of the flag
The blue-white-blue colors descend from the nineteenth-century Central American federation. Honduras adopted a five-star version in 1866, and later laws standardised the design and the officially specified turquoise-blue shade.
