History of the Oman Flag: 1970 Adoption, Qaboos Era & 2004 Update

Oman’s current flag dates from the political transformation of 1970, when the older all-red national tradition was replaced by a three-color design carrying the national emblem.

Before 1970: the old red flag

Oman historically used a predominantly red flag. The modern design deliberately preserves that older national color in both a horizontal band and the vertical hoist panel.

1970: a new national design

Oman’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that the current national flag was adopted by Royal Decree on December 17, 1970, during the early reign of Sultan Qaboos bin Said.

Why add white and green?

The new design broadened the national palette. White represented peace and green the fertility and greenery of the land, while red preserved the historic Omani flag tradition.

The national emblem

The hoist panel carries the white national emblem: a sheathed khanjar and belt over two crossed swords. The emblem itself predates the modern flag and originated as a royal crest of the Al Bu Said dynasty.

2004 update

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs records an update by Royal Decree on May 22, 2004. The essential white-red-green structure and khanjar emblem remained intact.

Why the 1970 design matters

The flag visually represents modern Oman while maintaining continuity with the country’s older red flag and traditional weapons emblem.
