History of the Ecuador Flag: Gran Colombia, 1860 Tricolour & 1900 Coat of Arms

Ecuador’s modern flag belongs to the yellow-blue-red family inherited from Gran Colombia, but its central coat of arms gives the country a distinct national identity.

Gran Colombia and the tricolour tradition

Ecuador’s yellow-blue-red tradition comes from the independence era and the former Republic of Colombia, commonly called Gran Colombia, which also included present-day Colombia, Venezuela and Panama.

Earlier Ecuadorian flags

Before the permanent return to the tricolour, Ecuador used several other designs, including blue-and-white flags associated with the March Revolution period.

1860: yellow, blue and red return

On September 26, 1860, President Gabriel García Moreno restored the yellow-blue-red tricolour as Ecuador’s national flag. The yellow band was given double the width of the blue and red bands.

1900: the modern state flag

In 1900 the government formally standardized the national flag and coat of arms. The coat of arms placed in the centre helped distinguish Ecuador’s state flag from the related tricolours of Colombia and Venezuela.

Why Ecuador’s flag still resembles Colombia and Venezuela

The similarity is historical, not accidental. All three countries inherited related yellow-blue-red traditions from the independence movements and the political legacy of Gran Colombia.
