Why Do Argentina and Uruguay Have Similar Flags?
Argentina and Uruguay share blue-and-white colors and a Sun of May because their flag traditions grew out of the same Río de la Plata independence era.
What do the two flags have in common?
Both use blue and white and both display a stylized Sun of May. These similarities reflect shared revolutionary history rather than one modern country copying the other.
How are the flags different?
Argentina has three broad horizontal bands—light blue, white and light blue—with the Sun of May centred in the white band. Uruguay uses nine alternating white and blue stripes and places the Sun of May in a white canton at the upper hoist.
Why nine stripes on Uruguay’s flag?
The modern Uruguayan flag has nine stripes, traditionally corresponding to the country’s original departments when the design was standardized in the nineteenth century.
Is the Sun of May exactly the same?
The two suns are related but not identical in graphic form. Both belong to the wider revolutionary symbolism of the Río de la Plata and ultimately draw on the imagery of the May Revolution and regional independence.
