Nepal has the world’s only non-rectangular national flag. It is formed from two stacked crimson pennants with a dark blue border and white moon and sun emblems.

What does the Nepal flag look like?

The upper pennant contains a stylised crescent moon, while the lower pennant contains a white sun. Both shapes appear on a crimson-red field edged in blue.

What do the symbols mean?

The sun and moon are traditionally interpreted as expressing the hope that Nepal will endure as long as the celestial bodies. Crimson is Nepal’s national color and is associated with the rhododendron, while blue is commonly linked with peace.

History and construction

Double-pennant flags have deep roots in Nepalese history. The modern design was standardised by the 1962 Constitution, which included an unusually detailed geometric construction method for producing the flag.
