Malawi’s national flag has horizontal black, red and green bands with a red rising sun in the upper black stripe.

Meaning

Black represents the African people, red the blood shed in the struggle for freedom, and green the country’s natural vegetation. The rising sun represents hope and the dawn of freedom for Africa.

History

The flag was adopted at independence in 1964. A different design was introduced in 2010, but the original flag was restored in 2012.
