What is on the coat of arms?

The arms feature a silk-cotton, or ceiba, tree beneath six stars. The tree recalls the site traditionally associated with an early treaty on the island of Bioko, while the stars represent the mainland and islands of the country.

Green represents natural resources and vegetation, white peace, red the struggle for independence and blue the sea connecting the country’s territories. The flag dates from independence in 1968, with the current coat of arms restored after 1979.
