Azerbaijan’s national flag is a horizontal tricolour of blue, red and green with a white crescent and eight-pointed star centred on the red band. The design originated with the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic in 1918 and was restored before independence from the Soviet Union.

What do the colors mean?
According to the President of Azerbaijan, blue represents the Turkic origin of the Azerbaijani people, red reflects the desire to build a modern society and develop democracy, and green represents belonging to Islamic civilisation.
History of the flag
The tricolour was first adopted on November 9, 1918, by the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. It disappeared after Soviet forces took control in 1920. The design returned in Nakhchivan in November 1990 and was recognised as Azerbaijan’s national flag on February 5, 1991.
