History of the Jordan Flag: Great Arab Revolt to the 1922 National Design

Jordan’s flag is directly descended from the flag of the Great Arab Revolt and has been used in its current form since 1922.

1916: the Great Arab Revolt

The modern Jordanian flag is derived from the flag of the Great Arab Revolt, launched in 1916.

Why the same four colors?

Black, white, green and red became central colors of the Arab Revolt and later of several Arab national flags.

1921: the Hashemite state in Transjordan

Hashemite rule in Transjordan began under Emir Abdullah I following the post-Ottoman political settlement.

1922: the current flag form

Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that the current form of the flag began to be used in 1922.

What changed from the Arab Revolt flag?

Jordan retained the black-white-green stripes and red triangle but added the distinctive white seven-pointed star.

What does the Constitution specify?

Article 4 defines the exact band order, red triangle, seven-point star and 1:2 proportions.

Why the star matters historically

The star transformed a broader Arab nationalist flag into a specifically Jordanian and Hashemite state symbol.

Why the design endured

The flag survived the transition from the Emirate of Transjordan to the independent Hashemite Kingdom and remains closely tied to the monarchy and Great Arab Revolt heritage.
