November 18, 1991: flag adopted
The Law “On the State Flag of the Republic of Uzbekistan” was adopted on November 18, 1991.
Why a new design?
The new flag replaced Soviet symbolism with national colors and symbols connected to Uzbek history, culture, religion and independence.
What does the design contain?
Blue, white and green horizontal bands are separated by narrow red lines, with a white crescent and 12 stars in the upper-left.
Why blue?
Official explanations connect blue with sky and water and note its use in the historical banner tradition of Amir Temur.
Why the crescent?
The crescent links ancient traditions with the newly independent republic.
Why 12 stars?
Official sources connect the 12 stars with historical traditions, ancient calendars and aspirations toward perfection.
What has changed since 1991?
The core state flag design has remained stable, making it one of the clearest visual symbols of Uzbekistan’s post-Soviet sovereignty.
