Mali’s national flag is a vertical tricolour of green, yellow and red. The colors belong to the Pan-African tradition.
Meaning
Green is associated with the country’s fertile lands and hope, yellow with mineral wealth and cultural heritage, and red with the sacrifices made for independence.
History
An earlier flag of the Mali Federation included a black human figure known as a kanaga. After Senegal left the federation, Mali removed the figure and adopted the plain green-yellow-red tricolour in 1961.
