What do the four stars mean?

The four stars represent the four states of the federation: Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae. The light-blue field represents the Pacific Ocean surrounding and connecting the islands.

History

The design developed from the flag of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. The four-star federal version was adopted in 1978 as the Federated States of Micronesia formed its own constitutional government.
